Building Ashgrave: Notes From a World Still Taking Shape
I've been sitting on this world for a while now, and I think it's finally time to start writing some of it down properly instead of just in scattered notebook pages and voice memos. This post is mostly a placeholder to make sure long-form, narrative-heavy posts render the way I want them to - headings, lists, images, quotes, all of it - before I actually start publishing real chapters or worldbuilding breakdowns.
The Premise (Working Version)
The story follows a courier who delivers messages between rival city-states that haven't spoken directly to each other in three generations, using a network of old, half-forgotten roads that technically don't belong to anyone anymore. Along the way she starts running letters that aren't supposed to exist between people who aren't supposed to be talking.
A few threads I want to keep pulling on:
- What happens to trust between nations when the only communication left is unofficial
- A magic system tied to distance and memory rather than raw power
- Cities that have quietly diverged in language and law without ever formally splitting
- Whether "neutral ground" can survive being useful to everyone
Nothing here is locked in - this is very much still wet clay.
Testing Images

This is where a hand-drawn map or region sketch would eventually go once I actually draw one.
A Character Nobody Asked For Yet
There's a minor character, a retired courier turned innkeeper, who exists mostly so the protagonist has someone to argue with about whether the old roads are worth the risk. He wasn't planned. He just showed up in a scene and refused to leave.
"The roads don't forget who used them. People do. That's the whole problem." - Osran, probably not his real name
I don't know yet if he's important or if he's just a very persistent placeholder character.
Quick Reference: Courier Ranks (Draft)
Rank | Route Length | Trust Level
------------|-------------------|-------------
Runner | Local, single city| None required
Warden | Cross-border | Vetted
Hollow-Hand | Off-map routes | Unofficial only
Might not survive the first real draft, but it's useful to have written down somewhere.
